A Sheikh who was accused of being a member of dreaded militia group Al Shabaab and radicalising the youth has been detained at Kamiti Maximum Prison after the prosecution opposed his release on bail.

Sheikh Guyo Gorsa was arrested January 13 at Madarassa Toba, Marsabit County while preaching in the town center, leading to massive protests in the area.

An affidavit sworn by police officer Moses Barkwang states that the Sheikh was transferred to Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (A.T.P.U) headquarters after he was found to be involved in terrorism-related activities within the country.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, officer Bakwang added that Gorsa’s mobile phone, containing his SIM and SD cards, were also seized awaiting forensic examination.

"The evidence shows that the accused has been in constant communication with a number of terrorists belonging to the Al-Shabaab based in Somalia and some within the country,” said the officer.

He further added that the evidence so far gathered showed that the accused and his associates had been planning attacks within the country.

Barkwang also stated that the activities of the accused and his associates posed a great risk to national security, hence it was crucial that he be detained pending the hearing and determination of his case.

Magistrate Andayi will make a ruling on the bond and bail terms application onMarch 1,2018.
