UAE ambassador to Somalia meets UN envoy in Mogadishu
Waagacusub.com - The ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Somalia, Mohamed Ahmed Osman Hamada, today met the UN special envoy to Somalia, James Swan, in Mogadishu.
The meeting was disclosed in a tweet by the UAE embassy in Mogadishu, which did not mention the issues the two discussed.
The UAE ambassador, who has been in Mogadishu for weeks now, had recently met Foreign Minister Ahmed Ise Awad and is expected to meet more government officials.
Relations between Somalia and the UAE has been tense since Somalia seized 10 million US dollars that was brough in by a UAE plane in Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport.
At the time, Abu Dhabi said the money was meant to pay the salaries of Somali security personnel.
Around the same time, the Somali parliament banned the UAE port operator DP World for claiming a stake at the Berbera port, together with Ethiopia, following tripartite agreement between the two and Somaliland.
It is believed that Somalia has since moved closer to Qatar and Turkey, rivals of the UAE and its allies, further widening the rift between the two countries.
