Two injured after powerful bomb rips through Afgoye
Mogadishu (WAAGACUSUB )- At least two people were seriously injured in Afgoye, 30km (18 miles) north-west of Mogadishu, on Monday afternoon following an IED blast that wounded the regional deputy security commissioner. The bomb blast came hours after Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on an SNA military base in Afgoye, a strategic town that lies crossroads for routes to the north, west and south of Somalia. According to residents, the heavy fighting began at midnight, and both parties used heavy weapons.
At least one soldier was confirmed dead in the early morning battle.
Al-Shabaab fighters have claimed responsibility for the attack through their local media affiliates.
African Union soldiers and Somali government security forces ousted the Al Qaeda-linked militant insurgency group from Afgoye in May 2012.
