Third group of Somali returnees from Libya arrive in Mogadishu
The third group of Somalis stranded in Libyan jails arrived in Mogadishu on Wednesday as part the government move to evacuate its citizens from the war-torn country.
A delegation led by the country’s Special Envoy for Migrants and Children’s Rights of Somalia Maryan Yasin travelled to Tripoli, the capital city of Libya, in early this to assess the situation.
The delegates convinced dozens of Somalis to voluntarily return home.
Yasin who met Somali migrants in Libya said the government will continue to repatriate all the voluntary registered returnees.
The first batch of the returnees among them three children and eight adults landed at Aden Adde Airport mid-February.
Somali Deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Guled who received the repatriated Somalis at the airport said the government was committed to ensuring all Somalis in Libyan and other foreign jails are returned home.
Late last year, President Mohamed Farmajo directed the then foreign affairs minister Yusuf Garad to facilitate the repatriation of Somali migrants stranded in Libya.
Officials of the government have welcomed the returnees at Aden Adde Airport.
The government of Somalia is collaborating with UNHCR and IOM to repatriate stranded would-be migrants following shocking reports that they were being subjected to torture, being held for ransom and even auctioned off as slaves in the northern Africa country.
