Professor Abdi Ismail Samatar, former head of Somalia’s electoral commission, on the vote buying by presidential candidates that took place on the last night of campaigning before last year’s (s)election in Somalia.

"Farmajo [current Somalia president] paid $30,000 per head. Hassan Sheikh [the then incumbent president] was paying $50,000 a vote,” Samatar said.

On election day, Farmaajo won 184 votes. That is more than $5.5 million allegedly paid to corrupt MPs in the final night of campaigning.

Hassan Sheikh won 97 votes. That is more than $4.8 million spent allegedly bribing rotten lawmakers in the last 12 hours of campaigning.
