Oct. 14 bombing driver faces the firing squad as Somalia marks 1 year

Waagacusub.com The driver of one of the vehicles which exploded during the October 14, 2017 bombing in Mogadishu was today executed as the country marked one year anniversary since the attack which claimed over 500 lives.

A military court in Mogadishu announced the execution of Hassan Adan Isaaq after it found him guilty and sentenced him to death February 6 this year.

The division one courts martial said in a statement the convict was responsible for the vehicles involved in the terror attack. Isaaq, the court said also drove one of the vehicles which exploded along Dan-Wadaagaha road as it was making its way to the city.

Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) footage shows the truck loaded with explosives driving fast towards Zoope Junction before it veers into the road divider and blow up incinerating vehicles and people trapped inside. At least 587 people were killed with 316 others injured as over 2,000 children were orphaned

The court also found Isaaq guilty of belonging to the militant group Al-Shabaab. He was 23 years old and hailed from south western region of Bay in Somalia.

The execution of Isaaq is the first in President Mohamed Farmaajo’s two year old administration.

Other suspects of the attack were handed jail terms in court rulings over the past year.
